Greens Launch Metro Public Transport Plan
19 February 2007
Greens candidate for Menai, Neerav Bhatt urges the adoption of the Greens metro transport strategy, with key strategies including metro rail services between the CBD and Parramatta under Victoria Road, establishing an independent Transport Co-ordination Authority to guide public transport planning and allocating at least 5% of the RTA budget towards bicycle programs.
"Thousands of people in Western Sydney face transport disadvantage. This causes car dependence because there are no affordable or available public transport options. Building more motorways instead of public transport is a waste of money that could be better spent upgrading services in Western Sydney, allowing bikes to travel for free and extending concessions.
"We have to plan ahead. This is about ensuring Sydney is still liveable in twenty years. Investment in public transport is vital to ensuring that our city does not become even more car-choked in the future,"
At the launch on 8 February, Greens Upper House MP Lee Rhiannon said: "Reducing car use and expanding public transport services is the way to restore equity and protect the environment.
"The Greens would allocate at least 5% of the RTA budget to bicycle programs, provide secure undercover bike storage facilities at bus and train stations and ensure that all new commercial buildings have secure bike parking and shower facilities."
The Greens metropolitan transport strategy also includes:
· Complete the North West – South West Rail Link by 2008.
· Publicly owned light rail to link Circular Quay with Railway Square, and to Burwood.
· Filter the Lane Cove, Cross City and M5 East Tunnels to world's best practice.
· Immediately restore Cityrail timetable to pre-September 2005 levels or better.
· Expand ferry services and oppose all privatisation plans for Sydney Ferries.
